Our Team & Leadership
Lead Pastor
Peter Boyd
Pastor Pete and Janet have just moved to Nelson and love this beautiful part of the world. Janet is a Plunket nurse and loves serving in the community. Peter has been in pastoral ministry for many years; 2 years in Christchurch, helping to plant the Grace Presbyterian Church in Ashburton; 19 years in Manurewa, South Auckland at St Andrews Presbyterian and then Covenant Church; and for the last 10 years he planted Shore Presbyterian on Auckland’s North Shore. Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Philosophy from Monash University Melbourne Australia and a Bachelor of Theology from the Australian College of Theology. He enjoys explaining the great truths of the Gospel of grace and loves to spend time with people helping them grapple with life. In Australia, where he grew up, Peter has worked in offices, farms, factories, taxis and youth ministry. Having grown up on a farm he never likes to be too far from the great outdoors. Pete and Jan love biking, tramping, reading, cooking and family. Together they have three adult children, one daughter in law, no pets, and a lot of bicycles.
Associate Pastor
John van Rij
John and his wife Alex are also newcomers to Nelson, having spent the last 7 years pastor of the Grace Presbyterian Church Invercargill. Alex has plenty to do caring for three energetic children, and also works part time in sales. Before entering ministry John was a structural engineer and has recently has picked up his tape measure, hardhat, and calculator again part time. John holds a Bachelor of Engineering (honours) from Canterbury University, and a Master of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary in St Louis, Missouri, USA, where Alex also completed a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. John loves connecting with people in the outdoors and through sports, and exploring new places. Together the John and Alex have three young children, one pet, and a lot of bicycles.
OVERSIGHT
Interim Elders
We are a Mission Church (Church Plant) of the Southern Presbytery of Grace Presbyterian Church of New Zealand which provides a supportive leadership and oversight team (Session) who are not local, until such time as we are able to raise up on site elders. Then we would move from Mission Church to Particular Church status.
